About the WLAN service

Pelicans Landing's Wireless LAN (WLAN) service provides you with a high speed Internet connection that you can use to surf the Internet, check your email and connect to your corporate IT systems.

Information at a glance

Access tickets can be purchased from the staff.

What you need to use the WLAN service

The WLAN service is based on the industry standard IEEE 802.11b technology which is supported on most computing platforms. If you have a laptop chances are that WLAN hardware might be built in or it might have been provided to you in the form of a PC-Card. There are a small number of WLAN PC-Cards available at Pelicans Landing. Please contact the staff if you need to borrow such a card. Please note that unless otherwise arranged there will be no support for installing the card in your computer.

Getting Access

If you want to access the Internet or your corporate IT systems you need purchase an access ticket from the Pelicans Landing staff. If you are part of a function or conference Internet access may have been included in the package. Access tickets are pre-paid and gives Internet access for an indicated number of minutes. The access tickets are only valid until the expiry date and un-used minutes are forfeited.

Pelicans Landing's WLAN should automatically be detected by your computer and will show up with a network name (SSID) of "REWlan". If it has not been automatically selected you will have to select it manually. How this is done depends on the computer and operating system you are using. If the the network is not detected you may have to enter its name ("REWlan") manually.

Your computer will get a TCP/IP address and DNS information automatically via DHCP. If your computer is not configured for DHCP please make the necessary changes before trying to use the WLAN. Remember to write down the old settings so you can revert back when finished using the WLAN. Some operating systems allow you to easily create new network locations if you need to change your default settings.

Please note that the traffic on the Wireless LAN is not encrypted unless you use a secure VPN solution or access SSL or SSH enabled services. If you use a secure VPN solution you may have to enable HTTP tunneling mode.

The WLAN covers the upstairs function and meeting rooms and may also be available in the downstairs restaurant.

Pricing

Access to the service can be included in your conference or function package. Please mention that you will require Internet access when you make your booking.

You may also purchase WLAN access tickets from the staff. They are currently priced at $22 (including GST) and will give you 12 hours of Internet access which you will have to use within three (3) days. User name, password and expiry date is printed on the access ticket.

If you have a need for more permanent access please don't hesitate to contact the staff and we can arrange weekly or monthly access options.

Sending Email

To send email from email clients on your computer you need access to an outgoing SMTP server. In many cases this is a service provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and works well as long as you are connecting to the Internet via your ISP. However, in an effort to reduce email spam the SMTP servers normally do not accept connections from outside users. Please note that your email service provider may allow you to use their SMTP server as they authenticate you in some way.

Some ISPs allow you to use their SMTP servers for a short period of time if you first have successfully retrieved email from one of their POP3 or IMAP servers. If your ISP supports this model make sure that you check your email before trying to send.

If you connect to your corporate IT systems via a VPN you should be able to send and receive email as if you were directly connected to your corporate network.

If you are experiencing problems when trying to send email you may need to, temporarily, use an SMTP server that accepts connections from Pelicans Landing's WLAN. The following SMTP server is available from Pelicans Landing's WLAN: smtp.swiftdsl.com.au port 25.

If your email service provider has a Web email interface you should be able to use that without any problems.

Corporate IT Access

If you are going to access your corporate IT systems you are likely required to use a secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) solution that protects your communication by cryptographic means. If you are experiencing problems connecting to your VPN server it may be due to that certain ports are blocked in firewalls along the communications path or that your VPN client is not configured for a Network Address Translation (NAT) environment. If you are having problems and can change the VPN client settings you may want to enable HTTP tunneling and NAT traversal. Please see your VPN client documentation for how to do this.

Fixed access

If you want to connect to the Internet using your fixed Ethernet connection please let the staff know in advance. There is limited ability to provide fixed Ethernet access on short notice.

If you require fixed Ethernet access for several computers please let the staff know at the time of booking so arrangements can be made.
